Cletus “Captain Clete” L. Challe, 88, Kewaunee, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. He was born March 31, 1937, to the late Raymond and Berdine (Vandermause) Challe. Cletus married Nancy J. Detampel at Holy Rosary Church on May 15, 1965.
Cletus was a great basketball player in high school. He served his country in the U.S. Army and spoke often of the time he was stationed in Tokyo. He came to be known as “Captain Clete” while Charter Fishing on the Great Lakes. He chartered out of Algoma for over 40 years. He enjoyed traveling, golfing and deer hunting. He and Nancy spent their Winters in Florida for over 20 years. Cletus hosted many trout boils and loved spending time with his family and friends.
Cletus is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jodi and Mark Snyder, Clarklake, MI, Vicki and Jeff Vollenweider, Kewaunee; two grandsons, Gunnar (Jessica) Snyder and Captain Jeffrey (J.J.) Vollenweider Jr.; great grandchild, Barrett Snyder; brother Raymond Challe, Sturgeon Bay; brother-in-law Wayne Rabas, Kewaunee; sister-in-law Ruth Challe, Green Bay.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; his parents; brother Darrell Challe; sister Carol Challe; brother-in-law Donald (Shirley) Detampel; sisters-in-law Shirley Rabas and Judy Challe.; father-in-law and mother-in-law Emanuel (E.P.) and Rose (Tischler) Detampel.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at Holy Rosary Church, Kewaunee. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 am with Fr. George Daniel officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
