Frederick "Fred" A. Schroeder, 93, Kewaunee, passed away peacefully Friday, May 2, 2025, with his beloved wife, Barbara, by his side. He was born on April 21, 1932, in Glenbeulah, WI, to the late Samuel and Charlotte (Amweg) Schroeder. He graduated from Berlin High School in 1950 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse until enlisting in the US Navy in 1952. During the Korean War, he served as a weather observer until his honorable discharge in December 1953. He then continued his college education and graduated from UW LaCrosse in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts education license in Physical Education and Science. Fred married Barbara A. Chappa on June 11, 1955, at St. Mark Church in Redgranite, Wisconsin.
He is survived by his brothers David (Donna) Schroeder and Gary Schroeder, his sister Barbara (Robert) Butzlaff, and his in-laws Robert (Jan) Chappa, Marge (Don) Van Handel, and Betty Harger.
He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Charlotte (Lottie), brother, Bill Schroeder; sisters, Vivian (Annie) Fero and Mary Mueller, and in-laws Harry and Theresa Chappa, Yvonne (Richard) Van Dyke, Lucille (Leonard) Reetz, Lawrence Chappa, Patricia Chappa and Duane Harger.
Over their 70-year marriage, Fred and Barbara raised a family to be proud of, including their children: Chris (Dawn) Schroeder, Betsy (Jeff) Burkhart, Jim (Joy Lynn) Schroeder, and Geralyn (David) Yu. Their grandchildren include: Amy (Chris) Lauder, Kimberly (Jason) Nimmer, Kelly (Chris) Dahlke, Alex and Katey (Jack McAloon) Burkhart, Emily (Logan) Russo, Hannah, Carolyn, and Chloe Schroeder, Elijah, Naomi, and Samuel Yu, and great-grandchildren Olivia and Johann Lauder, Trevor and Gavin Nimmer, Levi and Iyla Dahlke.
Fred taught high school science and physical education and coached a variety of high school sports. Beloved by his Kewaunee High students and athletes, Fred taught and coached there from 1964 to 1991.
Fred loved the outdoors, assisting the state and county with many field jobs after retiring from teaching. He was known as an avid fisherman cherishing his trips to Canada and Minnesota. He was passionate about sports, particularly loyal to the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, and the University of Wisconsin's football and basketball teams. He was a highly skilled woodworker, and over the years, made many treasured furniture pieces and birdhouses for his family and friends. He also took pleasure in the intricate process of fly tying and fly fishing.
Fred was a man of service. He served as a City of Kewaunee Alderman for several years and was referee for a variety of school sports. He was a very active member of the Holy Rosary congregation including Holy Communion distribution and managed their cemetery for many years. He was a proud United States Veteran and loved his memories of the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He greatly enjoyed trips all over the United States with family and friends.
Visitation and services will occur on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Kinnard Funeral Home, Kewaunee, with Fr. Bill Swichtenberg officiating. Funeral services and burial will take place at a later date at Holy Rosary Church.
The family would like to sincerely thank Hamilton Health Services in Two Rivers, Aurora Hospice Services, and the Aurora-Green Bay hospital staff on the 4th floor, and Emergency Room. We also extend our gratitude to the residents and staff of Oak Park Assisted Living of Green Bay.
