Orville J. Stender , 97, of Algoma passed away Thursday May 8, 2014. He was born to the late William and Emma (Reimers) Stender on March 17, 1917 in Three Hill, Alberta, Canada. He worked as a foundry manager at Johnston and Jennings in Illinois. On September 10th, 1944 he married Genevieve Sullivan. She preceded him in death on June 5th, 1999. Orville was an Illinois Certified Master Gardener, a bee keeper, and enjoyed raising many varieties of berries. He will be remembered as the man in Algoma who grew beautiful sunflowers in his front yard. Later in life he enjoyed his new hobby of woodworking.
Orville is survived by his two sons Howard (Vicki) Stender, Algoma; Donald (Diane) Stender, Lowell, IN; grandchildren Matthew (Anya) Stender, Erin Sherman, Lisa (Chaz) Conarroe, Joshua (Leah) Stender, Jeremy (Melissa) Stender, Krystal (Mike) Rowe, Paige Stender, Haley Stender, and Alexis Stender; five great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Visitation will be held at Wiesner & Massart Funeral Home, 1617 Flora Ave., Algoma on Monday May 12, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial service to follow at 4 p.m. Burial will take place on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at Skyline Memorial Park in Illinois. Online condolence messages may be expressed here .
